The future begins in Hyllie
Everyone is talking about sustainability, smart cities, prosumers, grids and smart meters – one trend follows the next. Most people describe these fuzzy concepts as future developments or abstract visions. It’s different in Hyllie. In this neighbourhood, the future of energy production has already begun.
This site visit will take you along the journey of the realization of the city of the future where you’ll experience how photovoltaic systems, smart kitchen appliances and clever storage and heating systems together form a true smart city. The integrated systems can react to the weather, for example, by feeding energy into the storage systems when it is sunny and then using the energy later when needed. With the smart grid solution deployed in Hyllie, the renewable energy is better used, when available, and the distribution systems can manage peak-loads.
The energy solution for future sustainable cities is flexible
In modern cities there are enough thermal energy flows generated by human activity to provide the base for both heating and cooling of the entire city. By connecting buildings with different needs and balancing the energy between them, ectogrid™ effectively uses all available energy flows and makes it possible to decrease both pollution and the energy consumption in a city. This is a revolution that will help us fight climate change and transform the energy market.
Can there be too much electricity in the system?
There is a lot of information on what happens when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn't blow, and batteries and backup power become important. But what happens when the wind blows strong and the sun shines its warm light, yet no one is at home to cook their pasta? These are the moments when the system experiences high production but has few customers who consume the electricity. The battery or batteries will charge up pretty fast, and what happens to the electricity then?
Sales and storage of electricity
There are many solutions to this problem. The local energy system could be able to connect to the central grid and transfer the "leftover production". In the future, this would mean that the people who own the production sources in the local energy system sell production into the central market. But it is also possible to use the power locally, for example to heat up water in boilers. This way the water can be stored in tanks and be used at a later time, but it can also be used to heat a pool or in hydronic heating systems.
